i have a pen-pal in Russia. and we have been chatting for quite sometime now. we have both wondered about each others cultures and countries so we decided to do a bit of an exchange. we are both going to send each other currency and a few items from our homelands. currently she is interested in getting a book about the Canadian natives before Canada was formed. this is an easy enough item.. though i am in search of something more.. i would like to show her what Canada is really like. so far she is sending me a matrioshka (Russian nesting doll)… and ushanka (Russian fur hat) . these items are very Russian… the only problem i am having is that Canada is such a mosaic of cultures… it is difficult to find what is actually Canadian. please help me out … price is not an obstacle… please note that i live in Alberta.. so it is difficult to get east coast things. and note that she doesn’t drink coffee… so Tim Hortons is out of the question…lol please give me some gift ideas thank you
What are some souvenirs I should buy in Barcelona? What is Barcelona (or Spain) known for. (e.g. glass from Venice, nesting dolls/vodka form Russia, etc….)
My budget is about €300. (obviously, it could be spent in little chunks or all at once)
My first attempt at stop action. It’s mostly just an experiment so I know it’s not perfect. I used a set of nesting dolls that we had at my house and just took a looooot of pictures. Yeah, don’t try to edit this type of thing with Windows Movie Maker. It took me forever…

One Chinese town has been flooded with Russia’s wooden Matryoshkas. But inside them you will find not the usual nesting dolls, but something absolutely different – so different that it’s caused outrage in Russia.

Captive, an animation company based in Lisbon, approached us to create the soundtrack to an animated feature to accompany Pocko’s exhibition of customised russian Matryoshka dolls beginning in Magma bookstores in London as part of the London Design Festival. Two of our composers worked collaboratively to produce the quirky treatment. The original brief was for a chic piece, with a slight feel of comedy and intrigue. The idea was for the work to play out like a little film with the soundtrack almost acting as dialogue and reacting to the animation. Oli Durant, Creative Director at Captive says: ‘We had quite a concise stylistic direction for the music, however it was one which we didn’t really think could be realised without full-blown live orchestration or weeks of work. So we were amazed with the outcome, it really took the brief beyond our expectations.’ Project: Pocko/Magma ’2 Russia With Love’ Agency: Captive, Lisbon

The Matryoshka nesting doll has been a symbol of Russia for generations, but the global credit crisis is threatening the cottage industry of Matryoshka-making.

Politics aside: First ladies job 07 July, 2009 While President Obama was busy with diplomacy Americas first lady visited a school for nurses in Moscow, where she spoke to orphans and was given a traditional Russian matryoshka doll made by the children themselves. Michelle Obama arrived in the Russian capital on Monday together with her two daughters and husband, who is in Russia on his first official visit as the head of the US. Traditionally, first ladies spend a lot of time in public, visiting cultural events and talking to groups of children. Michelle Obamas time in Moscow is no exception. Both Putin and Obama have made clear that a large gulf still exists between Moscow and Washington on such sensitive issues as Russia’s influence over the post-Soviet space, energy politics and economic and trade rivalry. Another key issue, the need to prevent a nuclear Iran destabilising the Middle East, leaves big differences. Also, Russia resents the actions of the US in Iraq and the US role in the deepening global recession, while the US remains wary of Moscow’s record on democracy and the rule of law. Yet however tough the talks are, they should be frank and straightforward. There is no point in talking in glowing terms about personal chemistry, as former US President George W. Bush did about Putin during their first terms, while harbouring deep policy disagreements. What is required, however, is flexibility. If Obama and the Putin-Medvedev tandem can work out a way of reaching …
Exploring the Souvenirs shop is one of the exciting thing for tourists. We were keen of doing shopping for souvenirs all the time. In this Souvenirs shop at downtown St. Petersburg, we found a traditional Matryoshka doll which included 20 different faces of the cute wooden dolls together!
Traditional Russian dolls dressed by popular fashion designers have gone on display in Moscow. The 31 dolls, known as Matryoshkas, had previously been auctioned for more than 700000 euros to raise money for charity. The event drew hundreds of fashion lovers, including supermodel Naomi Campbell.

One of Russia’s most famous symbols is having a birthday. It’s been more than 120 years since Matryoshka dolls first appeared in the country, and Muscovites have been celebrating.

My name is Sergei Korshak. I am a history teacher in the city of Bor. And, fittingly, I have a historical-political question. There are reports, not very many, but still, there are reports about the enlargement of regions through mergers, saying that these new entities will be headed by the current presidential envoys. How much truth is in all this and what should I tell my students? Thank you. VLADIMIR PUTIN: Sergei Nikolayevich, there is no truth in these reports. We do not have the opportunity and most important, the wish to enlarge the regions and to appoint the heads of these regions, at least I have no wish to do so. We have left this historical problem behind us. For good or bad, the heads of regions are elected by direct secret ballot. This is what the Constitution says and it should remain so.Secondly, as regards the regions and their enlargement. The law stipulates how it can be done. It can be done only through the expression of the will of the people who live in …
Traditional Russian Matryoshka Dolls are made in many styles and sizes. In the year 1900 the Russian “Matreshka” was awarded a medal at the Paris Exhibition of Applied Arts. Since then this lovely and entertaining art form has continued to win awards (and hearts) world wide. The shape of the dolls varies with the wood that was used. The wooden parts are hand turned in the same way they have been for generations. You will be amazed at the delicate strength of the pieces, and how well they fit together. The classic Russian dolls are of a figure of a girl. They were named “Matreshka” which is the traditional Russian “Matrena”. We had a class with lady Kulakova Eleng from the cith of Vladimir.
Nothing says Russia quite like Matryoshka dolls, or nesting dolls.
Those whimsical dolls that open up to reveal another, smaller version, and on and on...
Authentic Matryoshka Dolls are quite beautiful, and wonderful collection pieces.
There are also inexpensive versions, more appropriate for toys.
